the decision to end Reading Rainbow can also be traced to a shift in the philosophy of educational television programming. The change started with the Department of Education under the Bush administration, he explains, which wanted to see a much heavier focus on the basic tools of reading — like phonics and spelling.
WTF PBS? We beat those assholes. We fucking murdered them in the last election. Why are you still playing like their bitch?
It wasn't just about narrating a book, it explored subjects from the book in real life. Every one was like a little Nova or Frontline episode for young children. It was all about learning and critical thinking, that's what made the show valuable. It demonstrated the whole point to reading!
Kids don't read to score better on standardized test so dim-witted teachers and fundamentalist school board members and whining PTA busybodies and insipid politicians can pat themselves on the back for how well our childrens is learning. Kids read because they want to read. Kids read because adults are stupid and television is stupid and books are the only place where they have the freedom to stop tolerating the suffocating stupidity all around them.
Update: Best episode EVER!
